European stamp of quality to the veterinary study programme at LIFE

The veterinary study programme at LIFE- Faculty of Life Sciences has received accreditation from EAEVE - European Association of Establishments for Veterinary Education. The accreditation, only given to one European veterinary establishment earlier, was accompanied by praise for the veterinary study programme at LIFE which is called exemplary and one of Europe’s best as regards both education and research.

Traditionally, the veterinary study programmes are evaluated regularly at approx. ten-year intervals. In Europe, the European Association of Establishments for Veterinary Education (EAEVE) is responsible for handling the evaluation procedure. Based on a self-evaluation report and a visit, EAEVE will determine whether the establishment still complies with the EU’s minimum requirements for the veterinary study programme, and can thus be approved. On top of the traditional evaluation, veterinary programmes can also obtain accreditation from EAEVE if the quality and the quality assurance of the education and the related research comply with international accepted academic standards.

Visit by international experts

An evaluation and accreditation visit was paid to LIFE this autumn. A team of ten international veterinary experts visited LIFE, including all relevant departments and facilities as well as external partners and teaching facilities. Prior to the visit two self-evaluation reports had been drawn up which, together with interviews of academic, technical and administrative staff and students as well as reviews of facilities and documents, formed the basis for the evaluation of the delegation.

The results of EAEVE’s evaluation is now available: LIFE is not only given EAEVE’s approval but also its accreditation.

- Only one other veterinary educational establishment, the Finnish veterinary study programme, has previously received an accreditation, says Head of Veterinary Studies at LIFE, Peter Holm, DVM, Ph.D.

Exemplary in all areas

The evaluation team was very pleased with the quality of the veterinary study programme, the academic level and the procedures in place to secure the high quality. The veterinary study programme at LIFE was, they said, excelling as an exemplary European veterinary teaching and research facility.

- The state-of-the-art facilities, research-based and hands-on teaching, an equilibrated output oriented curriculum, a sound financial basis, a dedicated and enthusiastic staff and quality assessment procedures well in place and enacted received praise in connection with the accreditation, says Peter Holm.

International recognition

Peter Holm goes on to say:

- Internationally, it is important for us to have a veterinary study programme which is ranked as one of the best in Europe. This makes us more attractive to international students. The accreditation can also help us attract talented teachers and researchers and make it favourable for other European universities and faculties to enter into collaboration and exchange agreements with us.
