Individual Studies
In certain exceptional cases, international exchange students may do an Individual Study project. The Individual Study project must constitute part of their BSc or MSc degree. An agreement is made with a supervisor on the basis of the project description the student submits when he or she applies to LIFE.
International students are responsible for finding their own supervisor, for example, through academic contacts at their home university.
Individual Study Agreement
At the beginning of the semester, the international student and his or her supervisor sign an Individual Study Agreement specifying
- The subject
- The working title
- The number of ECTS credits (max. 15 ECTS)
- The form of examination
- The date of submission/examination
The supervisor and the student must sign the agreement and send the original copy to the Secretariat for Internationalisation. The secretariat ensures that the information is entered into STADS.
As the international student may have limited or different experiences with supervisors, it is recommended that the student and the supervisor match their expectations carefully. It is a good idea to determine:
- The frequency of meetings
- How often drafts must be handed in
- To what extent feedback will be oral or written
Result of the Individual Study
When the individual study has been completed, the supervisor must complete the Individual Study Report (available from the Secretariat for Internationalisation). The form must be sent to Study and Students’ Affairs so that the result can be registered in STADS.
