General course information
PhD courses - basic information
During your three years as a PhD student, you must obtain about 30 ECTS credits through PhD courses, equivalent to 6 months' full-time work load. The ECTS credit value of a PhD course is determined from the work load so that 1 credit equals 25-30 hours of work.
It is sometimes difficult to find relevant PhD courses, and therefore it is important to talk to your fellow PhD students and your supervisor(s) about this - they might have useful experience. Make sure that the PhD courses you choose are highly relevant for your PhD project.
Open market for scientific PhD courses
In Denmark, we have a so-called Open market for PhD courses. In order to give the PhD students the best opportunity to obtain a high-quality PhD training, scientific PhD courses are offered without payment among the partner universities. This means that you, as PhD student at LIFE, are free to register for PhD courses at these universities. You may have to pay for food, expensive materials, books and accomodation.
Generic PhD courses - general skills courses
Generic courses are courses whose content is relevant to PhD students across their academic research, e.g. philosophy of science, basic statistics, introductions courses etc. Every year The Graduate School of Life Sciences arranges a number of generic courses plus an Introduction course for new PhD students. You are strongly encouraged to sign up for the introduction course (3 credits) since it will introduce you to almost everything that is relevant for you to know in relation to your PhD education at LIFE and will make the start-up phase of your PhD easier. You will also meet a lot of other PhD students from LIFE at the course.
Internal market for generic PhD courses at University of Copenhagen
PhD students enrolled at LIFE can participate in generic courses at other faculties for free provided vacant seats are available. If the courses are expensive, then a fee may be charged by the organizing department.
