Introduction Course

Blue flowers in Campus summer garden

Starting a research career...

This course will give you an introduction to what you can expect as a PhD student. You will get an overview of the study, the skills and competences necessary to become a mature and independent researcher and advice on to how to balance the challenges of your career with the rest of your life.

Purpose

This course will enable you to make a realistic plan for your PhD project and similar projects. The special working conditions of the PhD student will form the off-set for the course. You will learn how important it is to think about project organisation with a clear division of responsibilities as well as suitable ways of communicating. This course will also give you the required – and compulsory – skills within good research practise. It is therefore not necessary for you to participate in the upcoming mandatory courses in Responsible Conduct of Researchers when you have passed this course.

Content

The main themes of the course are:

  • Career planning – your personal development plan
  • Oral presentation techniques
  • Scientific writing
  • Intellectual property rights and patents
  • Project management
  • Philosophy of science and good scientific practice
  • Collaboration with your supervisors
  • Aspects of PhD administration

You will make a personal development plan (PDP) based on a learning needs assesment. You will work on the PDP during and after the course. You will need to discuss aspects of the PDP with your supervisor, so please make an appointment to meet with her/him 1-2 weeks after the course for this purpose.

The course will also be a platform for networking among new PhD students from different departments at UCPH.
