When are PhD students covered by insurance as regards industrial injuries?
PhD students not employed at LIFE
The origin of the salary is not decisive. If the PhD student is working as a researcher at University of Copenhagen (KU) – working with research projects that benefit KU - the PhD student will be covered by the Danish Act on industrial injuries. If an injury occurs, the bill will be sent to KU, and the University may pass it on to the employer of the PhD student if relevant.
PhD students about to be employed by KU who have initiated a research project but who have not yet received a letter of employment (for instance because administrative staff have been too busy)
A student who have started a research project that benefits KU, is covered by insurance- irrespective whether the PhD student has received a letter of employment or not. Confirmation that the PhD student has initiated the project is required – an oral agreement with a supervisor/head of department is sufficient, but a written agreement (for instance a simple e-mail) is of course better if any dispute or problems should arise.
