Carmen Nieves Morten adjunct professor, ChinaAssoc. Professor Carmen Nieves Mortensen, The Danish Seed Health Centre for Developing Countries (DSHC), has been appointed as adjunct professor at China Agricultural University (CAU) in Beijing.

Carmen Nieves Mortensen has worked in the field of seed health and seed pathology for since 1977 and she has established links of regional and international collaboration with countries of Africa, Asia and Latin America. In recent years China has been added to the list and now this collaboration will be enhanced.

CAU has almost 20.000 students and specializes in agriculture, biology, engineering, veterinary medicine, economics, management, humanities and social sciences. In December 2007, the first agency of testing and evaluating seed health in China, Seed Health Centre of China Agricultural University (SHC-CAU), was established.

DSHC supported the establishment of SHC-CAU with technical advice and models for the physical facilities of the centre and curricula of courses. SHC-CAU is now a support and service centre of testing and evaluating seed health for seed commercial industries and research institutions worldwide.

The collaboration between DSHC and the Chinese partners started with the visit of a Chinese scientist Dr Xili Liu to DSHC for 1 year (2005-2006). Dr Liu visited the Department of Plant Biology and Biotechnology under the Sino-Danida collaboration and administrated by the Cirius programme. DSHC further supported her stay by covering additional costs related to her stay and participation in international meetings and also materials and technical staff support under her research period at LIFE.

- The visit by Dr Liu has resulted in a very strong partnership with our Chinese colleagues. The Chinese look forward to be members of the international community and good tights of collaboration in particular with African countries, Carmen Nieves Mortensen explains.

Appointing Carmen Nieves Mortensen as adjunct professor will enhance the communication and cooperation between CAU, University of Copenhagen and DSHC, including academic research, student retention and administration. Carmen Nieves Mortensen will make academic presentations and participate in the education of graduate students from SCH-CAU and Department of Plant Pathology at CAU.

The 3rd Symposium in Seed Health in Agricultural Development (SHAD) was held in Beijing from August 25-27, 2010. This meeting was organised by DSHC and sister regional Seed Health Centres of Africa (African Seed Health Centre: (AfSHC); Asia Seed Health Centre (AsSHC) and CAU-SHC.

During the opening ceremony Dr. Qi-Xin Sun, Vice President for R&D, CAU, issued the  adjunct professor certificate of CAU to Carmen Nieves Mortensen.
