New Danish centre at LIFE to boost knowledge about our cells - 30.06.2011

The Center for Advanced Bioimaging has now been inaugurated at LIFE – the Faculty of Life Sciences at the University of Copenhagen. The centre will have some of Denmark’s best supermicroscopes at its disposal, facilitating new knowledge about unknown cellular functions and properties. It will pave the way for huge progress within stem cell, cancer, food quality, animal reproduction and plant biotechnology research.

Bioimaging is a relatively new research area used for incorporating the use of advanced supermicroscopy to screen the finest details in a living cell without disturbing it. This makes is possible to monitor the development in healthy and diseased cells and thus gain more insight into cell biology and cell communication.

CAB

The Centre for Advanced Bioimaging (CAB) hosts facilities that are available to Danish and foreign research teams and businesses.

“We are pleased that we can offer Danish and foreign researchers and businesses this opportunity. The centre’s state-of-the-art measuring equipment ranks along the very best in the world, and we have also made sure that the users will be thoroughly trained in how to handle the equipment. Danish researchers and businesses need no longer travel abroad to conduct their experiments,” says Head of Centre, Professor Alexander Schulz from LIFE – the Faculty of Life Sciences.

The Center for Advanced Bioimaging Denmark is a collaboration between three faculties at the University of Copenhagen: LIFE – the Faculty of Life Sciences, the Faculty of Science and the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences.

The centre was inaugurated on Thursday 23 June at 10 a.m. with an inaugural address by Ralf Hemmingsen, Rector of the University of Copenhagen.
