Why should I study Abroad?

Studying abroad can offer many benefits:

  • Professional
New knowledge and new insights: attending another university lets you try another way of studying, and new subject combinations and working methods give you new perspectives on your profession.
  • Personal
It is a challenge to live in a new country. You broaden your intercultural understanding and become more aware of what is special about your own country. You learn to be flexible and navigate in a different culture – qualifications that you can use during your studies and when you start working.
  • Linguistic
A language is best learned in the country where it is spoken. As the world becomes increasingly international, it is important that you are able to speak languages other than Danish.

It is important that you consider what you want and expect to get out of your study period abroad and prepare yourself mentally for a period of studies abroad.

What are you looking forward to experiencing? What will you miss while you are gone?

Try making a list of the advantages of studying abroad and the challenges you anticipate experiencing. This may help you decide what form of studies would suit you best, where you would like to go (How far away? What language will you speak?) and for how long.

  • Testimonials                                                                                                    If you would like to know where other students have studied abroad, student testimonials in Danish are available at the University of Copenhagen's website. You can also read testimonials from several LIFE students who have studied abroad (see "Student Testimonials" and "The Erasmus Experiences".) Reading student testimonials can be beneficial in terms of both serving as inspirational as to where to go, how to prepare yourself, as well as being an excellent opportunity for students to share knowledge about academic, social and cultural differences. If you would like to study a particular student report in detail, you should visit the Student Services office, where you can pick up student reports by LIFE students who has studied abroad.
  • Relevant Websites                                                                                      Read LIFE's Study Abroad webpages and other relevant webpages such as the University of Copenhagen's study abroad webpage (in Danish only) and the Danish Agency for International Education's Grib Verden (in Danish only).
  • Ask Around                                                                                               Talk to students who have studied abroad and talk to the teaching staff. They may have experiences with and connections to partner institutions abroad and be able to give you advice.
  • Attend Events                                                                                        Attend study abroad events. These are advertised regularly under News on the Study Abroad webpage and by Student Services.
