Profile

EM Food of Life is a cross-disciplinary programme in the science of animal-derived foods. In a unique way, the course combines animal science and food science and technology, focusing on the social as well as cultural and, of course, scientific aspects of the food production chain. EM Food of Life has inputs from both animal and food science, and outputs relevant to both consumer and animal health. Essential components are:

  • FoodMeat and milk products derived from all relevant farm species, including pigs, cattle, small ruminants and poultry
  • LifeEffects of nutrition on the health of the consumer, and effects of production systems on the health of the animal

Through the EM Food of Life MSc programme, you will acquire basic theoretical knowledge, practical technologies and research and development methodologies preparing you for a career in the food production industries.

Topics you will work with:

  • How to meet increased global demand for meat and milk products
  • How to deal with increased emphasis on product quality and proven health benefits for the consumer
  • How to improve animal health and welfare and achieve a reduced environmental impact

Career opportunities

The EM Food of Life programme will prepare you for a career in the Danish or international food production industries. You will gain a solid theoretical foundation, practical experience and technical skills in both animal science and food technology subjects, and you will obtain significant knowledge of the global challenges involved in providing safe, healthy and nutritious meat and milk products to feed our growing human population. When you graduate, you will be able to apply to high-level PhD programmes, pursue a management career in the primary production industries or food processing industries, work in consultancy, for private companies or for international and governmental agencies and NGOs such as FAO and WHO.

Structure

As an EM Food of Life student, you must study in two of the consortium partner countries. If you hold an Erasmus Mundus scholarship, these two countries must be different from the country in which you obtained your last university degree.

You will also have the opportunity for a short study period in Canada, the UK, New Zealand or Italy.

All students will attend an Introductory Module at the start of Year One and a Summer School at the start of Year Two.

In the first year of the programme, you choose either animal or food science-related courses. During the second year, you can choose elective courses, and you finalise your studies by writing a research-based thesis related to either animal or food science or a combination of both.

EM Food of Life is offered by a consortium consisting of four European universities:

  • LIFE – Faculty of Life Sciences at the University of Copenhagen
  • Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences
  • Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona
  • University of Helsinki

Student life

Students enrolled in the EM Food of Life programme are part of a truly international study environment no matter at which of the four partner universities they study.

Integration of all students enrolled in the programme is highly prioritised by the consortium. Consequently, an Introductory Module at the start of the first year and a Summer School at the start of the second year are organised to bring all students in the programme together. This is your opportunity to network with other talented students from all over the world and thus to build a strong student community in the programme.
