Joining a research school

Cat on an urban wall

What is a research school?

When you start as a PhD student at LIFE, you might be told that you are affiliated to a research school. But what does that mean? What is a research school to you?

A base

For three years, your research school will be your base point where you meet PhD students within the same research area as yourself; fellows who are at the beginning, in the middle or at the end of their PhD studies.

Support in several ways

Your research school fellows can provide you with support and answers to questions that may pop up. Of course, you can have purely scientific discussions with your research school fellows but they can also help you deal with supervisors and administrative issues. In other words, they are your network.

The research school curriculum

Every research school has its own curriculum that you have to attend to get the full benefit of the research school. This curriculum is established by acknowledged researchers within the research areas and could be seen as the scheme of competences that they see as essential for a researcher in that specific research area.

Your choice

The Head of your research school is in charge of the curriculum and you always have the opportunity to ask questions concerning the curriculum and decide if this is the right research school for you.
